AKRO is the native cryptocurrency of the Akropolis project, an ecosystem of decentralised finance (DeFi) applications for cryptocurrencies. It is an Ethereum-based protocol that aims to encourage users to save and accumulate wealth through crypto assets. The ecosystem’s apps are largely developed using the AkropolisOS framework, the Sparta platform designed for uncollateralised lending, and the Delphi yield farming aggregator. AKRO acts as a governance coin, with token holders given voting rights on the future of the Akropolis protocol and its portfolio of products. Since its foundation in March 2018, the Akropolis project eventually launched on the Ethereum mainnet in June 2020. There is a fixed supply of AKRO coins amounting to 4 billion. Two private token presales were launched in January and June 2018. More than a fifth (22.5%) of all AKRO tokens were sold during this period. There has been increasing confidence in the security and legitimacy of the Akropolis platform since a spate of foiled hacks in August 2020. The founders subsequently moved all AKRO within smart contracts to custodial wallets with institutional-grade security. In the same month, Akropolis announced a bug bounty program, rewarding users in AKRO or stablecoins for uncovering security flaws in the system.
